About 150,000 years ago, a volcanic explosion formed the small caldera known as the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake. These underwater hotsprings and geysers keep some areas of West Thumb free of ice in the winter as most of Yellowstone Lake freezes over!
The dramatic thermal features are unbelievably colorful...and HOT....

Boardwalks are built so that all the people can enjoy the incredible pools without getting burned and without destroying any more of the landscape than necessary...but wouldn't it have been awesome to trek across this area in a completely natural state!!
In the past people used to fish in the lake and while the fish was still on the line, they would dunk it in this hot hole and cook the fish! Wow! I should have been born 100 years ago!!
